Kids in Focus is the Colorado Children’s Campaign’s October research brief series. Using the best available data and research, the series builds the evidence base for policies that help Colorado children grow up healthy, learn, and thrive.
This year’s series focuses on:
- Third grade reading
- The role of public policy in decreasing child poverty
- Access to pediatric primary care
Each brief combines an in-depth look at where Colorado stands with evidence-based policy recommendations.
Every child in Colorado should be able to see a doctor when they need one. Yet provider shortages leave many children without reliable access to primary pediatric care, particularly in underserved parts of the state. The impact of these shortages is felt most acutely in rural communities. Many rural families face limited access to pediatric providers, making it harder for children to receive preventive care, treatment, and ongoing support close to home.
Access to care could become even more challenging as federal funding and coverage programs face uncertainty. Colorado’s leaders should protect children’s health coverage and invest in pediatric providers so every child can access care when and where they need it.
