Kids in Focus is the Colorado Children’s Campaign’s October research brief series. Using the best available data and research, the series builds the evidence base for policies that help Colorado children grow up healthy, learn, and thrive.
This year’s series focuses on:
- Third grade reading
- The role of public policy in decreasing child poverty
- Access to pediatric primary care (coming next week!)
Each brief combines an in-depth look at where Colorado stands with evidence-based policy recommendations.
Colorado has proof that policies and investments can reduce child poverty. The Colorado Poverty Measure, funded by Gary Community Ventures and developed by Columbia University’s Center on Poverty and Social Policy shows that programs like the Family Affordability Tax Credit, housing assistance, and SNAP help lift tens of thousands of children out of poverty each year.
But the benefits of economic opportunity are not shared equally across Colorado. Poverty rates remain substantially higher for some groups of children and in some regions of the state, creating unequal opportunities to grow, learn, and thrive.
The progress Colorado has made is not guaranteed to continue. Federal cuts and state fiscal constraints could weaken the very programs that are helping families today, making it essential to protect and strengthen proven investments that reduce child poverty.
