Statement on impact of federal policy changes on Colorado children
Colorado is home to 1.2 million children. Their well-being is our shared responsibility.
The national policy landscape is changing. Many children, families, and people who serve them are confused and deeply worried.
As a community, we must hold steady and work together to protect and uplift kids.
This week, federal officials issued a memo that interrupted and threatened to freeze funding for programs and services that are essential to kids and families. That memo was rescinded, but the future of federal funding is still unclear.
We know federally funded programs support housing, health care and healthy food, education, and other basic needs for kids and families. Freezing or ending these funds would have direct, often devastating impacts on kids’ lives and futures.
Coloradans are also responding to a range of other changes that would affect children’s lives. These include:
- New immigration policies that could lead to profound and damaging disruptions for kids and their families.
- New steps to investigate and end diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts that could alter the programs and services available to young people in and out of school
- Changes to federal support for K-12 education and public health.
The Colorado Children’s Campaign continues to fight for a brighter, more equitable future for every child in Colorado.
We are working with our policymakers and our community to track and respond to the changing federal landscape. Together, we must do what we can to prevent harm and push for what’s right for kids. We are grateful for all the Coloradans who are putting kids and families first every day.
