Last month, the federal government ended immigration enforcement protections for schools, health clinics, child care centers, and other sensitive spaces that serve children. Federal officials also announced and began implementing plans to detain and deport thousands of people. These and other immigration-related orders have created fear and confusion for many Colorado children, families, and the people who serve them.
Children deserve safe places to learn and grow. Our state is home to more than 29,000 immigrant students. But many more children are affected by the recent orders, including those who are at risk of being separated from family members or other loved ones.
Colorado and national organizations are providing resources to speak up for and support children and families who are immigrants or have mixed immigration statuses:
- 2-1-1 Colorado: 2-1-1 Colorado has created a comprehensive immigration resource map.
- Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC): CIRC has resources for families and providers.
- Children Thrive Action Network (CTAN): CTAN created a toolkit for protecting families at risk of deportation.
- The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP): CLASP offers a guide to creating safe space policies for early childhood programs.
- The National Immigration Law Center: Provides a fact sheet on protected spaces and Know Your Rights guidance.
