Mathangi Subramanian
Dr. Mathangi Subramanian began working in early childhood education and policy in 2006, when she interned at Sesame Workshop while pursuing a doctorate in education at Columbia Teachers College. During her five years at Sesame, she was promoted to Assistant Vice President, ran the organization’s post Haitian earthquake emergency response, started and managed Sesame Street coproductions in a dozen countries, and created the global education department’s strategic plan.
Next, she served as a senior policy analyst at the New York City Council, where she expanded access to UPK seats, helped pass legislation to make kindergarten mandatory, and fought budget cuts to preschool and childcare. After council, she was awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholarship to India, where she conducted a 2.5-year ethnographic study of India’s early childhood care and education system, the largest publicly funded ECE system in the world.
Since then, she has consulted on preschool work for Netflix, Sesame Workshop, Warner Brothers, and Literary Safari, and authored award-winning novels and children’s books available all over the world. She currently proudly serves as a commissioner for Denver Public Libraries.
