Head Start and Early Head Start served more than 10,100 children and pregnant women in Colorado in 2021, a decline of more than 2,000 people served compared to pre-pandemic enrollment. Head Start programs promote physical, cognitive and social development and boost school readiness among young children living in poverty. However, the number of Colorado children who qualify for Head Start still far exceeds program capacity. The number of available slots is limited by funding, which is authorized by the U.S. Congress.
